Portfolio Spotlight: Happy Ground - Biochar in Thailand
This series highlights the companies Carbon Drawdown Initiative has invested in.
What began as a small venture connecting urban consumers to farmers in Thailand has grown into a climate-tech company with bold ambitions.
Happy Ground, founded by Pearl Pattamaphon Dumnui and Moh Suthasiny, builds on years of trust with farming communities to tackle one of agriculture’s biggest challenges: decarbonizing supply chains.
Their mission is simple yet powerful: to help food and agriculture companies achieve Scope 3 decarbonization while ensuring farmers benefit with higher resilience and profitability.
The Work: Biochar + Precision Agriculture
Happy Ground combines hands-on fieldwork with a digital insetting platform:
Biochar adoption turns agricultural residues into carbon sinks, rather than emissions from open burning.
Precision agriculture tools leverage IoT and satellite data for farm-level insights, helping farmers grow smarter and earn more.
Insetting for corporates enables measurable Scope 3 emissions reduction within supply chains, making climate action traceable and reportable.
This approach links farmers, cooperatives, and corporate partners in a system where everyone benefits from lower emissions, stronger soils, and better yields.
Progress So Far
Happy Ground is already operating at significant scale:
70,000 farmers engaged across Thailand
60,000+ hectares of land in transition
Partnerships with 5 cooperatives and corporate buyers
It’s proof that climate-positive agriculture can scale rapidly when built on trust and technology.
Looking Ahead
Happy Ground’s roadmap reflects their ambition to lead in agricultural decarbonization:
October 2025: MVP demo of the Insetting Platform, integrating IoT and satellite data for real-time farm traceability and Scope 3 reporting.
2026: Commissioning of an industrial biochar carbon removal (CDR) project processing 7,000 tonnes of residues per year, to avoid open burning while generating 5,000 CDR credits annually.
These milestones will position Happy Ground as a regional leader in climate-smart agriculture and carbon removal.
Why We’re Backing Happy Ground
At Carbon Drawdown Initiative, we back ambitious founders who blend science, community, and scalable business models. Pearl and Moh’s work with Happy Ground is a strong example of decarbonization that strengthens supply chains, empowers farmers, and builds climate resilience.
This is already happening in fields across Thailand today, and it’s only the beginning.
